Bratislava is the capital and simultaneously the entry gate into the Slovak Republic. The beauty on Danube, as called within living memory, with 425,459 inhabitants is the smallest metropolis of Europe. The name Bratislava is officially applied since 1919, as various names were mixed here before, starting with the Latin one - Possonium, Hungarian one - Pozsony and the Austrian one - Pressburg. Bratislava, a multi-cultural city, besides variety of historical monuments, museums, galleries, international exhibitions offers also a lot of sports and musical events being organized all year long. The most known and the most visited is the Coronation Festivities. At the beginning of September the whole town is robed into the history, when the Austro-Hungarian king and queens were crowned. Bratislava is living in non-repetitive atmosphere during the Christmas Trades and the New Year’s Eve. That time, the MainSquare and the neighbouring streets became a centre of entertainment for people from around the world. Visitors can taste the roast gooses, potato pancakes “Lokše”, strudels and other traditional delicacies during these days of mirth. Except presence at the events, every visitor can savour the atmosphere of the town in the various wine restaurants, pubs or fashionable restaurants and to degust the local culinary specialities or the conventional wines grown in the ambient vineyards of the Little Carpathians. Bratislava is the town for everybody.
