The first written mention of Oľšavica dates from 1308, from that periodis also the church of St. Nicholas. In the second half of the 18th century,two natives of the village became famous, Mukachevo bishops ŠimonŠtefan and Michal Manuel Olšavský, who made signifi cant contributionsto the equal rights of the Greek Catholic clergy and the independence of the Mukachevo bishopric. In October 2023, Pope Francis appointedJonáš Jozef Maxim, a native of the village of Oľšavica, as the newarchbishop of the Prešov Archeparchy and Metropolitan of the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia, which the citizens of this village are appropriately proud of. Folk crafts, weaving, blacksmithing, milling, sewing folk costumes, fl ax processing have a tradition in the village. These are kept alive to this day. The maintenance of traditions is presented by the folklore group Jalinka and Studenočka. Attractions include a Gothic church, a pseudo-karst cave, below Spiška, Gerčak‘s Mill, original folk architecture, wooden houses – wooden granaries and a mineral spring. The settlement Podproč with the church of St. Cyril and Methodius from 1801 is affi liated to the village.
